RULES & EXPECTATIONS

EXPECTATIONS

Grief Street is strictly PG-13 in tone. Although the game may discuss darker topics such as murder, violence, sex, and more, we will be avoiding overly graphic depictions. We expect players to keep this tone in mind.

Additionally, we’ll be providing players with a safety tool called the X-Card. If at any time a player feels uncomfortable with content that is introduced into the game by the mods or by another player, they can veto that content by messaging the player or mods an “X”. The players and the mods must respect what the X-Card is for.

Once the card is used, the person who used it should indicate what content made them uncomfortable. They do not need to explain how or why it made them uncomfortable. The person can explain if they want to, but they shouldn't be pressured to do so or debated out of their boundaries.

From there, the content can be retconned, changed, faded to black, or skipped forward. If there’s ever an issue, contact the mods privately and we can figure out a solution.

An example of how to handle an X-Card interaction can be seen below.
Player A: I'm using the X-card--I'm uncomfortable with detailed descriptions of spiders, can you edit your reply so that the description is skimmed over?

Player B: Oh, sure! I'll keep that in mind for the future. Do you want me to avoid mentioning spiders entirely?

Player A: I'm fine with just casual mentions of spiders. Thanks for asking, though!

Player B: No problem!
Thank you for helping make the game fun for everyone. You can read more about the X-Card here.

RULES

1. Be respectful. Treat your fellow players the way you want to be treated. Although this game is based around murder, we also know that some people may be uncomfortable or even triggered by certain kinds of content. If you’re unsure, always ask first if someone is okay with threading something. We expect our players to communicate with each other in a mature manner. Remember--behind every character is a real person.

We will not tolerate harassment or bigotry of any kind, and we will kick you from the game if we see this behavior.

2. Please warn for potentially triggering material. We ask for all players to warn for any potentially triggering content in their tags (i.e: suicide, sexual assault, gore, abuse, body horror, pedophilia, incest, abortions, etc). Use common sense. We understand if you accidentally leave out a content warning occasionally, but please use discretion when approaching these topics.

A lack of appropriate respect for sensitive topics will result in us giving you a warning. This includes making light of or joking about the aforementioned topics. We take player comfort and safety seriously, and if you cannot abide by our expectations, we will remove you from the game entirely. You're playing with other adults, so act like it.

3. IC =/= OOC. You are not your character, and players are not expected to agree with everything that their character says or does. Negative character interactions are fun to play, but should be kept on an in-character level.

That being said, sometimes things your character does in-character may be hurtful to someone out of character, even if this is not your intention. In a shared writing environment, we expect people to be conscientious of other people’s boundaries and communicate in a civil, collaborative manner.

4. Players must be 18+. Additionally, smut/sex threads are not allowed on the log community. In the wise words of Professor Oak, "There's a time and place for everything, but not now."

5. Don’t metagame. For those unfamiliar with the term, metagaming is essentially using external knowledge to influence the actions of an ingame character. For example, gathering secret information from other players and using that information to “win” in-character discussions. It’s not fair to the other players, and ruins the spirit of the game.

6. Please remain active. Before you join, we ask you to evaluate how much time you can commit to the game. Due to the small cast size and the fast-paced nature of the game, it becomes difficult to play if people stop contributing to discussions or investigations. We know that schedules can become hectic, so if you find that you need to exit the game early, let us know and we’ll discuss options!

7. Communicate with us! If you want your character to do something that will affect the game at large, let us know and we can work something out. We love having characters make poor decisions and face the consequences of their actions.

8. If you are given a secret role, make sure to keep it a secret! We know that games involving secret roles are exciting, and it's tempting to want to reveal what you know right away! We ask you keep in the spirit of the game and show discretion when revealing information about your involvement. If you aren't sure if you can reveal something or not, please reach out and ask!

9. Mods get the final say. We are open to critique and comments, and will do our best to cater to our players' needs. However, we have the right to say “no” to something for any reason.
